Il grande mago Livorno è riuscito a legare la luna con una fune invisibile e, dopo averla fissata alla ringhiera del suo balcone, manda a chiamare il califfo, sovrano del paese, per compiacerlo.
«Bravo, Livorno» gli aveva detto il califfo consegnandogli una borsa piena di monete d’oro. «Da oggi la luna è mia e chiunque voglia vederla, se vorrà darle un’occhiatina, mi dovrà dare una moneta. E se vorrà dilungarsi a guardarla, dovrà pagarmi di più. E tu Livorno, stai attento. Se la fune si slega e la luna vola via, con lei volerà anche la tua testa».
A sostenere il mago Livorno ci sono i suoi giovani aiutanti: Bella, taciturna e affidabile, e il giovane Isidoro, curioso e impaziente, che sogna di poter dimostrare il proprio valore e di tenere, almeno una volta, la corda magica stretta a sé. Una notte, architettando un sotterfugio, il ragazzo riesce finalmente ad afferrare la preziosa fune, fino a che a un certo punto non si addormenta e… la luna vola via.
Quando la notizia giunge alle orecchie del califfo, tutto precipita. Il destino del mago, di Bella, della città intera è nelle mani di Isidoro.
Le illustrazioni in bianco e nero ci portano sui tetti di una città orientale, tra eleganti architetture, tappeti decorati stesi ad asciugare e la luna che segue con lo sguardo il voltare di pagina dei lettori. Il suo tratto fine e conciso tratteggia le scene salienti della storia e accompagna la narrazione sino a un finale che apre al futuro e a nuove possibili avventure.
