C’è un cortile incolto e selvaggio, in mezzo ai palazzi in cui vivono Dafne e Basilio, con una casupola in rovina dalle tegole blu circondata da alcuni alberi, tra cui una grande quercia centenaria. È lì che i due amici trascorrono i loro pomeriggi fuori casa, raccogliendo more, facendo piccole esplorazioni, osservando il movimento degli insetti mentre vengono spiati dagli scoiattoli. Un giorno, però, vengono a sapere che quella casa diroccata verrà presto abbattuta e che al suo posto ci costruiranno degli uffici.
Dopo la demolizione della vecchia costruzione, i due bambini, le loro famiglie e i loro vicini si mobilitano per difendere quello spazio così gioioso e colorato: lanciano una petizione, costruiscono casette-nido per gli uccelli, hotel per insetti, e appendendo uno striscione tra il tiglio e la quercia che inneggia “Salviamo il cortile selvaggio!”.
Le stagioni passano e il cortile diventa il punto di ritrovo della comunità, con un orto, altalene, sedute per godersi la natura insieme agli animali che vivono lì, in attesa di notizie sul destino del luogo… fino a che un misterioso abitante del bosco non fa sentire la sua presenza e fa nascere una nuova speranza.
Attraverso la schiettezza del punto di vista infantile, l’autrice Anne-Hélène Dubray mostra come la forza di una comunità unita possa essere decisiva per difendere la bellezza di uno spazio condiviso, sollevando tematiche che toccano da vicino la vita delle nostre comunità, come l’importanza di vivere in città costruite a misura d’uomo, in cui spazi naturali e umani si intrecciano e si sovrappongono nel rispetto reciproco.
La natura attraversa le pagine mettendo radici in ogni vita che incontra: “Mi immagino il canto degli uccelli, le volpi in agguato, i cervi temerari e le formiche indaffarate che, un giorno, hanno attraversato la mia stanza” dice Dafne pensando all’antica foresta che occupava il cortile prima dell’avvento dei palazzi, e assieme a lei i lettori sono portati a pensare (e ripensare) gli spazi urbani che frequentano.
