C’era una volta la fiaba del Gatto con gli Stivali. Un giorno questa celebre storia, amatissima da bambine e bambini di tutto il mondo, decise di mescolarsi con i vorticosi colori di Vincent Van Gogh e di dare inizio a un nuovo viaggio.
Tutto inizia nella casa di un vecchio mugnaio, che alla sua morte lascia ai tre figli un’eredità alquanto bizzarra: al più piccolo affida il mulino, al fratello di mezzo tutti i suoi soldi, e a Vincent, il fratello maggiore, dona la sua immaginazione e… un gatto!
Ben presto il gatto si rivela dotato di parola e di scaltrezza e, munito di stivali e di un grande cappello, mette su la nota messinscena del Marchese di Carabas, che farà guadagnare a Vincent ben più dell’eredità ricevuta dai suoi fratelli.
Sarà così che un giovane Van Gogh e l’astuto Gatto con gli Stivali se ne andranno in giro insieme attraversando campi di grano e cieli stellati, coloratissime distese di tulipani e onirici paesaggi notturni, spacciandosi per il famoso Marchese o ritirandosi a dipingere nell’intimità di una piccola stanza arredata con un letto, una sedia e un vaso di girasoli.
Con le sue pennellate viscerali e un apporto creativo capace di conferire un riconoscibile tocco personale anche alle opere più conosciute, Morello si cala in una sua originale interpretazione sia dell’iconografia del pittore olandese sia del Gatto con gli Stivali che diventa, con la sua coda esageratamente lunga, parte integrante dei soggetti dipinti da Van Gogh.
Il gatto accompagna Vincent tra pagine ricche di citazioni da scovare e decifrare: la sua lunga coda si camuffa in cipresso nelle tele del grande artista, attraversa sentieri provenzali, notti piene di stelle e campi di fiori, svelando l’accurato lavoro di ricerca nel patrimonio pittorico di Van Gogh.
