Vecchissimo, misterioso e dall’aspetto alieno, il limulo è il protagonista di un originale albo divulgativo che intreccia scienza, ironia e meraviglia.
Il limulo esiste da sempre. È robusto, cocciuto e pieno di speranze. Un animale eccentrico, dai tratti quasi alieni, che sopravvive come un fossile vivente, tale e quale al suo primo giorno, da milioni di anni.
Questo insolito abitante dei mari ha una coda portentosa, lunga e aguzza come uno spadino – telson – che tra le altre cose lo aiuta a tornare sulle sue zampe quando si rovescia sulla sabbia a guscio in giù. Una vera salvezza!
Il limulo è un infallibile astronomo e, per giunta, ha il sangue blu. I suoi antenati hanno viaggiato senza sosta di oceano in oceano e nonostante sia piuttosto grande – almeno quanto una crostata – pochi sono al corrente della sua esistenza. Eppure il limulo è un esemplare straordinario, un eroe inconsapevole che custodisce segreti antichi e meraviglie tutte da scoprire.
Con un testo dal taglio leggero, in cui la divulgazione si intreccia con una narrazione ispirata, l’autrice racconta caratteristiche e abitudini di questa creatura spesso sottovalutata e fraintesa. Già nel suo nome scientifico troviamo un’imprecisione: il limulo è classificato come Limulus Polyphemus in onore del gigante con un occhio solo, ma in realtà di occhi ne possiede parecchi, molti dei quali si trovano sulla pancia e gli permettono di sopravvivere nel suo limaccioso habitat. Il suo aspetto preistorico, poi, rimasto uguale per migliaia di anni, è da considerarsi una strategia di sopravvivenza davvero ingegnosa: il robusto carapace, per esempio, si impreziosisce di conchiglie e cirripedi per mimetizzarsi al meglio nei fondali marini.
Il libro è stato realizzato con la consulenza scientifica dell’ERDG (Ecological Research & Development Group), un’organizzazione del Delaware (USA) che ha per missione la conservazione delle quattro specie di limuli esistenti.
