Al centro della narrazione c’è una bambina molto amata, dalla sensibilità fuori dal comune, capace di stupire e di stupirsi e di riconoscere la gioia nelle cose e nelle persone che la circondano.
La bambina protagonista non vede con gli occhi, eppure vede molto a fondo e sa immaginare come nessuno. Per esempio, quando al museo tocca per la prima volta le zanne di un elefante, ne rimane tanto impressionata da percepire la sua presenza ovunque: lo immagina saltare la corda insieme a lei, farle compagnia mentre passa l’aspirapolvere, starle accanto, prima di addormentarsi, lo ritrova perfino nel cielo, nelle forme delle nuvole descritte dal papà.
Oltre a un elefante invisibile, la bambina ha anche altri amici, come Zanfretta, il bastone che aiuta il nonno a camminare e che ha salvato entrambi da un incidente durante un’avventurosa passeggiata; Pavel, un compagno di scuola con cui impara a scrivere in un codice segreto fatto di tanti puntini da toccare; e perfino una balena, che la aiuta a fare amicizia e a giocare nella neve fresca.
Gli occhi di questa piccola protagonista, così capaci di guardare dentro di lei, ci permettono di vedere il mondo diversamente da come sempre lo guardiamo e di scoprire una nuova modalità per fare dell’immaginazione un gioco comune.
Le illustrazioni morbide e spontanee di Yulia Sidneva giocano tra il visibile e l’invisibile, dando voce ai pensieri e alle fantasie della protagonista. A ognuno dei racconti è assegnato un colore principale (blu, viola, arancione e marrone) su cui si staglia sempre il giallo, che riflette il rigoglioso immaginario della bambina, tra elefanti, sirene, balene e uccelli di ogni forma che danzano tra le pagine.
