Pete è innamorato del calcio e pensa solo a mandare in rete il pallone, dalla mattina alla sera. Gioca in una squadra, gli Orsi del Pallone, e non vede l’ora di partecipare al torneo cittadino, tanto che si allena senza sosta per passare le selezioni. Quando i gemelli Riku e Raku gli rubano il posto, grazie alle costose divise donate dal padre, Pete non si arrende neanche di fronte a questa ingiustizia, così decide di fondare la sua squadra: gli MM, i Migliori del Mondo.
Il tempo stringe e Pete non ha ricevuto neanche una risposta al suo appello, ma mentre si prepara, imperterrito, al torneo incontra degli amici tanto improbabili quanto fedeli: Totti, un dolcissimo cane a tre zampe; Eino, un anziano vicino di casa con una misteriosa spilla dorata a forma di pallone; Elias e Miriam, che con il loro aspetto robusto e piazzato intimoriscono tutti; e Matti, un ex calciatore in rovina che però non ha perso il tocco del campione. Il torneo è alle porte e la squadra è un vero disastro, ma quando tutto sembra perduto, entra in scena un nuovo e misterioso partecipante.
L’entusiasmo contagioso di Pete e dei suoi amici racconta una storia esilarante, tra situazioni improbabili, gag tutte da ridere e personaggi indimenticabili, come il cagnolino a tre zampe Totti, che nonostante la disabilità fa delle parate in porta fenomenali, l’anziano vicino di casa Eino, che esibisce con fierezza una misteriosa spilla ricordo dei tempi gloriosi in cui giocava a calcio e i prepotenti gemelli Riku e Raku, che non si fanno scrupoli a “comprarsi” un posto in squadra (ma poi ne vedranno delle belle).
Un breve romanzo pieno di cuore che tocca con delicatezza, e una buona dose di umorismo, temi forti e universali, come il fair play, la lealtà nell’amicizia, la resilienza e l’empatia nei confronti del prossimo, con una sensibilità capace di parlare sia ai bambini che ai loro genitori.
