Teheran, giugno 2005. Alla vigilia di un’elezione destinata a irrigidire il potere religioso con la vittoria di Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, l’ayatollah Kanuni — giudice potentissimo e volto della repressione — viene trovato assassinato nel suo ufficio al Palazzo di Giustizia.
La sua morte apre una crepa nel regime: la lista dei possibili colpevoli è lunga quanto la memoria del Paese: dai mujaheddin del popolo agli ex fedayin, fino ai vari nemici interni del sistema stesso; tuttavia, basta trovarsi non lontano dal luogo del delitto per essere sospettati.
È quello che succede a Narek Djamshid, un giovane reporter venuto dalla Francia per scrivere un articolo sul Paese in cui era nato, e a Leila Tabihi femminista islamica, apparentemente intoccabile, perché il padre era un’eminente personalità della Rivoluzione. I due vengono così arrestati, e partendo dalla loro detenzione emerge un Iran attraversato da tensioni sociali, ambizioni soffocate, giochi di potere che si consumano dietro porte chiuse. L’indagine non sembra fatta per far luce sull’omicidio, rivela invece un meccanismo che si alimenta di opacità, dove la verità è un territorio instabile e spesso inaccessibile.
Un romanzo noir che usa le convenzioni del poliziesco come pretesto per guardare dentro un sistema che teme la luce, e restituisce il ritratto di un Paese in bilico tra modernità e repressione.
Dall’Incipit: L’estate a Teheran si annunciava siccitosa, vibrante per gli ingorghi che bloccavano gli autobus stracarichi di gente in mezzo alla mischia delle automobili. La calura era calata su Leila nel silenzio del suo appartamento, un silenzio interrotto dalle telefonate impreviste giunte dopo l’ora della preghiera serale. Di notte, rimuginava ancora sulle chiamate: Kanuni in persona, che le dava appuntamento; poi Massoud, dopo tutti quegli anni… La sua mente correva senza freni, scacciando il sonno. Avrebbe fatto meglio a pensare a qualcos’altro, al test di ingresso all’università di suo nipote, per esempio. Amir-Ali era un ragazzo serio e lavoratore, diceva di non crederci, ma faceva di tutto per riuscirci, da mesi. Dio sarebbe stato al suo fianco.
