Lontano da ogni elitismo culturale e accessibile anche ai lettori meno esperti , il volume si propone come una guida lucida, scientifica ma soprattutto umana, per rispondere a una domanda fondamentale: come si ridefinisce oggi il confine, talvolta così labile, tra la cosiddetta normalità e la patologia mentale?
A rendere unico questo lavoro è la complessa macerazione interiore dell’autore. Arturo Geoffroy unisce infatti le competenze accumulate in oltre quindici anni di attività ospedaliera e accademica all’esperienza vissuta in prima persona come “paziente riluttante”. In seguito a gravissime aggressioni subite sul posto di lavoro, Geoffroy ha infatti sviluppato un disturbo post-traumatico da stress poi evoluto in disturbo delirante. Questo doloroso calvario, che lo ha trasformato temporaneamente da medico a degente, conferisce alle pagine un valore di autenticità raro, offrendo lo sguardo complementare del “sanitario accorato” e del “paziente qualificato”.
«Ho deciso di scrivere questo testo dandogli una veste divulgativa» – spiega l’autore nella nota introduttiva – «con lo scopo di demolire quelle che ormai sono false credenze diffuse tra i non addetti alla materia»
Dopo un’ampia introduzione polemica circa l’incerto, tuttora vago senso che può avere il concetto di «sanità mentale», l’Autore dà dei cenni preliminari della fisiologia della nostra psiche, per poi passare a esaminare le alterazioni del suo funzionamento e i disturbi psichici più frequenti, sempre affrontando le complesse tematiche con una terminologia chiara e comprensibile, per l’obiettivo dichiarato di divulgare concetti e conoscenze che sono alle fondamenta del funzionamento dell’organo più complesso che la Natura abbia concepito. Gli ultimi due capitoli sono dedicati a illustrare succintamente sia le moderne terapie farmacologiche dei disturbi mentali, sia le più comuni teorie e tecniche di psicoterapia. Il libro è destinato a tutti coloro che siano curiosi di approcciarsi a questa affascinante materia, che fondamentalmente si interessa del comportamento umano, con tutte le sue sfaccettature. Sia per motivi personali che per l’ambito lavorativo, questo testo può soddisfare costruttivamente molte curiosità. Solo la conoscenza può renderci liberi, al contrario delle false credenze che, implicitamente, ci rendono schiavi dell’ignoranza e della superstizione, condannandoci a vivere in modo opaco, indietreggiando di fronte a ciò che ci è sconosciuto.
