La dissoluzione tra ragione e sentimento

Voltaire e Rousseau furono tra i filosofi che più influenzarono i movimenti sociali e politici del XVIII secolo. Il valore della tolleranza propugnato da Voltaire e il sentimento della natura espresso da Rousseau costituiscono senza dubbio il loro maggior lascito nel campo del pensiero. Di temperamento diverso se non opposto, entrambi si proponevano di riformare la società. Nel primo predominava la levità e l’ironia, nel secondo le emozioni e il disprezzo del potere. Voltaire fondava la regola sulla ragione, Rousseau sul sentimento. Per l’uno l’uomo si perfeziona vivendo in società e staccandosi dalla natura, per l’altro invece avvicinandosi alla natura. Voltaire lottava per le scienze e per il progresso, Rousseau attribuiva alla società la colpa della miseria e dell’infelicità degli uomini. «Écrasez l’infâme» è il motto di Voltaire, «L’uomo è nato libero e dovunque è in catene» è l’amara constatazione di Rousseau.
Nietzsche respinse entrambi i punti di vista. Pur avendo dedicato a Voltaire la prima edizione di Umano troppo umano nel 1878, considerandolo uno spirito libero, la cancellò nella edizione successiva del 1886 e contro il razionalismo di Voltaire pose in risalto l’istinto e la vitalità. Quanto a Rousseau fece propria la formula del ritorno alla natura, ma a differenza del ginevrino intese la natura non come originaria bontà, come idillio, come eden, bensì come spontaneità, indifferenza al bene e al male, slancio creativo. Diffidando da poeta filosofo del progresso, comprese che decisivo è il valore d’una civiltà: «Chi con il suo potere precipita la natura nel baratro dell’annientamento, deve sperimentare la dissoluzione della natura anche su se stesso».
La nostra civiltà, che sta devastando la Terra, merita pienamente l’affondo di Nietzsche.
