All’età di 16 anni Corinna von Bassewitz, oggi giornalista, comincia a sospettare che suo padre non sia ciò che dice di essere, cioè un soldato dell’Esercito tedesco e, in seguito, un diplomatico. Lo sente rispondere al telefono con un nome diverso e la nonna lo sorprende a cambiare furtivamente le targhe dell’automobile.
Ma solo dopo la morte del padre, avvenuta nel 1985, Corinna trova in soffitta vecchi biglietti da visita nei quali egli appare sotto falso nome come rappresentante di un grossista di spezie. Ci sono anche lettere e documenti che riguardano il Servizio federale di intelligence, responsabile della ricognizione civile e militare della Germania ovest all’estero.
Corinna contatta l’archivio dei servizi segreti e scrive Il segreto di mio padre, la storia vera di una spia della Germania negli anni della Guerra fredda, del terrorismo della Rote Armee Fraktion, dei combattimenti tra protestanti e cattolici in Irlanda e della guerra in Vietnam. Come ha scritto il quotidiano berlinese Tagesspiegel “John le Carré avrebbe adorato questo libro”.
Chi era dunque mio padre? La verità risale a molto tempo fa e ciò che racconto in queste pagine sono solo frammenti della vita di mio padre come agente segreto, che solo lui potrebbe confermare. Ecco perché mi sono presa alcune libertà nello scrivere questo libro: dall’interpretazione all’abbellimento. Ignorare la realtà, o nasconderla dietro una bella facciata, è un’abitudine di famiglia che di tanto in tanto riprendo. C’è un altro aspetto che bisogna tenere presente mentre si legge questo libro: i membri della famiglia e le altre figure che ronzano nella testa di un bambino o di un adolescente non coincidono necessariamente con le persone reali. Ciò che mi rimane di quel tempo sono ricordi che srotolo come una pellicola Super 8, fotogramma per fotogramma, leggermente sfocati e al rallentatore. (Dalla Prefazione di Corinna von Bassewitz)
