Nei primi anni Novanta del secolo scorso un trentenne albanese emigra clandestinamente in Grecia. A casa la situazione precipita: il figlio Tori inizia a scrivergli lettere (che non gli invierà mai) per raccontare i continui tradimenti della madre Lora.
Tori muore improvvisamente e la voce che gira in paese è che la madre abbia ucciso il figlio conficcandogli nel sonno un ago rovente in testa.
Il protagonista rientra in Albania; la moglie è ricoverata in manicomio e lui si sposa con una ragazza bella e molto giovane, che si trova presto incinta e lo tradisce.
Feroce realismo di matrice americana ed epopea balcanica, cruda rapsodia e narrazione incalzante si intrecciano nel romanzo Il paradiso dei folli dello scrittore albanese Virion Graci.
Il padre si occupò seriamente del figlio dopo quattro anni, quando Ana, la sua seconda moglie, molto più giovane e bella di lui, aveva perfezionato l’arte della cucina. I cento e cinquantacinque partecipanti alla cerimonia della traslazione delle ossa ebbero il raro privilegio di provare l’abilità della nuova donna di casa coi sette piatti tradizionali, cucinati da lei, per il pranzo della sepoltura. L’uomo addetto alla sepoltura non rivelò al padre che dalla superficie del cranio di suo figlio emergeva la punta di un ago, giusto dello spessore che occupava prima la pelle. Il tanatoprattore, amico del padre, aveva strofinato con le sue mani tozze, coperte da guanti pesanti da muratore, il cranio macchiato, ma si era fermato sull’ago… un frammento libero… sì, era davvero un ago… lo aveva estratto con attenzione per non provocare danni o rumori strani… un ago lungo sette centimetri, un ago comune come quelli che usiamo tutti per cucire.
