Verso la fine degli anni Sessanta negli Stati Uniti un pakistano, noto come Yogi Bhajan, creò la 3HO, un movimento che si espanse in pochi anni in tutto il mondo. Sotto le sue indicazioni i discepoli sposavano sconosciuti, digiunavano, meditavano, praticavano respirazioni e posizioni yoga per tempi prolungati, indossavano il turbante, donavano il 10% dei loro guadagni e allontanavano i figli da casa il prima possibile. Dharma Bernardi, cresciuta all’ombra di questa comunità, racconta in prima persona come le pratiche e le regole imposte da Bhajan abbiano influenzato ogni aspetto della sua vita e di quella dei suoi genitori. Il libro alterna il racconto personale a fatti di cronaca che coinvolgono il maestro e i membri della sua cerchia più intima, implicati in situazioni alquanto discutibili, poco trasparenti e inquietanti. Un viaggio affascinante e sconvolgente che mette in discussione i confini tra fede, manipolazione e ricerca della verità.
Dall’introduzione: Yogi Bhajan è sicuramente stato una personalità complessa e un leader carismatico che ha segnato la vita di moltissime persone in Occidente dal 1969 a oggi, venti anni dopo la sua morte. Dharma è figlia di due miei amici devoti di Yogi Bhajan, praticanti di Kundalini yoga e facenti parte del primo gruppo italiano di seguaci, mentre lei appartiene alla seconda generazione europea segnata da costui. Il modo e lo stile con cui il culto si è sviluppato negli USA e in Europa differiscono in molti modi e l’adesione alla setta ha avuto dinamiche e risvolti differenti nelle due aree geografiche (…) Egli ha dettato la legge della comunità basandola su rigorose regole morali e di comportamento, unite a promesse di conquiste e liberazione spirituale attraverso l’osservanza devota delle stesse. In realtà non si è mai attenuto alla regola da lui stesso formulata, sempre gridando contro il mondo, elevando se stesso a giudice supremo di tutti noi, che lo abbiamo seguito. Chi lo ha avvicinato per devozione, aspirazione di crescita spirituale, bisogno d’appartenenza e di autoconsapevolezza, come è accaduto a me, ha continuato, nonostante le incongruità della situazione, a mantenere il focus sulle ragioni della propria scelta, incapace forse di vedere l’enormità dell’inganno.
