Con questo libro Vuillermin affronta di petto la propria storia di privazione e mancanza, ma anche, come in questi quaranta racconti brevi, piccoli e grandi dolori della vita a cui la letteratura può cercare di dare un senso.
Così, con Tre gatti. Un ragazzo, con le quotidiane e a volte fantastiche avventure di tre gatti (Bento, Siro, Chat-Badà) e di un ragazzo (Piero, che è anche lui un po’ un gatto), Vuillermin prende congedo dai suoi fantasmi, e lo fa con una prosa tra narrazione libera e riflessione sul senso della perdita.
Bento, Sirio e Chat-Badà sono tre gatti molto strani. Insomma, un po’ reali e un po’ immaginari. Vivono insieme a Piero, un ragazzo che ha perso il padre e che se ne sta sempre tutto solo a pensare e fantasticare. Perciò hanno deciso di adottarlo, per trascinarlo in mezzo al mondo e aiutarlo a crescere. Le loro sono piccole avventure a lieto fine, storie semplici di vita quotidiana, divagazioni leggere sull’esistenza, incontri fugaci con altre creature.
Quello che accomuna i tre gatti e il ragazzo, nonostante le differenze, è la caparbia volontà di dare un senso a qualcosa che, sin dal principio, è andato perduto o comunque storto. Le loro imprese non hanno nulla di eccezionale e quindi non meritano di essere ricordate. In questi racconti brevi, nella forma di apologhi e parabole che non vogliono insegnare nulla, l’autore si concede il piacere di narrare le sobrie e ordinarie peripezie dei suoi stralunati personaggi: Bento, Sirio, Chat-Badà e Piero.
