Siamo alla fine degli anni Settanta e la Turchia attraversa un periodo di instabilità politica ed economica, ma a Kilic, zona residenziale, dove vivono ingegneri e medici in servizio nel complesso minerario adiacente alla città di Zonguldak sulla costa del Mar Nero, la vita scorre tranquilla e spensierata, tra serate al cinema, partite a canasta, balli e cene. La piccola comunità di funzionari è infatti molto unita e i rapporti di vicinato sono improntati alla massima solidarietà fino quando la moglie del direttore degli impianti minerari non viene trovata morta. Questo non sarà che il primo di una serie di eventi inquietanti che culminerà con un altro atroce omicidio. La polizia indaga, ed è pronta ad attribuire i crimini a uno sbandato del posto. Ma Yildiz, moglie di uno degli ingegneri, divoratrice di gialli e sarta per passione, non si accontenta. Da acuta osservatrice, accumula indizi che la portano a conclusioni ben diverse.
Negli ultimi giorni del 1979, probabilmente ero io la donna più stanca del quartiere. Per quasi due mesi, in vista del Capodanno, avevo confezionato abiti molto elaborati per le vicine. Quando era arrivato il momento di preparare il mio, non avevo più un briciolo di energia. O almeno, così mi lamentavo di continuo con mio marito Ziya, che, coccolandomi fin troppo, cercava di aiutarmi a raccogliere le forze. In realtà era contento nel vedermi così indaffarata nel taglio e cucito. Ogni occasione era buona per parlare di come la sua cara consorte avesse cominciato a cinquant’anni a confezionare abiti, di come quell’attività andasse piuttosto bene, e delle meraviglie che ero in grado di creare.
