Da sempre gli uomini violentano le donne, in particolare quando fanno la guerra, atavica attività maschile, in occasione della quale il corpo femminile diventa terra di conquista. Oggi, lo stupro su larga scala è considerato un crimine contro l’umanità e in questo libro ripercorreremo il lungo percorso che ha condotto la famiglia umana a fare i conti con una violenza tanto cruda. Partiremo da una ricostruzione storico-filosofica per cogliere l’origine latente della violenza di genere, guardando ad Aristotele e Galeno, ma anche alle teorie sulla nascita dell’agricoltura, osservando come nell’antichità la donna fosse considerata un bene a disposizione dell’uomo, un bene che in guerra può (e deve) essere razziato. Con il tempo, lo stupro da effetto collaterale è diventato un’arma vera e propria; a tal proposito esamineremo quanto sul finire del Novecento è accaduto in ex-Jugoslavia e in Ruanda, tristi vicende da cui però ha mosso i primi passi la giustizia internazionale. Concluderemo con un’esame sull’attualità della disparità di genere nel mondo, offrendo anche spunti di speranza.
Più volte, man mano che andavo avanti a scrivere le pagine che seguono, mi sono infuriata. Ho letto, raccolto e inserito all’interno di questo lavoro testimonianze agghiaccianti e disumane di tantissime donne abusate e violentate, e fin da subito mi sono domandata del perché, in tutti questi anni di studio, non avessi mai trovato tra le mani un libro di storia che parlasse del calvario delle donne. Da sempre le donne sono vittime di stupri, violenze e fenomeni di schiavismo. Questi fatti in particolar modo sono un elemento costante dei conflitti bellici, antichi, moderni e purtroppo contemporanei.
