Un racconto semplice e coinvolgente. Due fratelli Dario e Diego sono bullizzati dal superbo Tony, sempre accerchiato da amici compiacenti. L’ultimo giorno di scuola i due fratelli si trasferiscono a casa di zio Duccio, simpatico e protettivo, che svolge la funzione di guardiano nella Casa De Floris, dove vivono due vecchietti scontrosi e litigiosi.
Negli stessi giorni è bandito un concorso di fotografia sul tema: la metamorfosi. La frizzante amica Margherita spinge i due fratelli a partecipare; Dario accetta di unirsi alla ragazza per cercare un soggetto vincente da fotografare, nel frattempo, dipinge una copia di un quadro che raffigura una ballerina di danza classica, appeso al muro della villa; e mentre lo porta ad un amico, incontra Tony che lo deride; quando la gang compie violenza anche su Margherita, appena sopraggiunta, Dario non esita a rompere il quadro in testa al capo dei bullo, il cui viso prende il posto della ballerina, e Margherita capisce che quello è un soggetto vincente per il concorso fotografico, così scatta qualche foto e scappa via. Quando i due giovani si ritrovano, danno il titolo alla foto: “Il bullo al ballo”, e Dario decide di partecipare al concorso per vendicarsi delle umiliazioni subite.
Tony viene a sapere della foto che sarebbe stata vista da tutti, anche dalla sua famiglia, così si rabbonisce e a Dario, oltre a chiedere scusa, domanda di ritirarla dal concorso. Sia lo zio, sia il fratello spingono il protagonista ad accettare le scuse e a comportarsi di conseguenza, ma egli assapora la vendetta. La sera del concorso, Margherita viene premiata e dalla esposizione manca la foto di Dario: una decisione della giuria o dell’autore che forse aborra la vendetta?
Un bel racconto vibrante, specialmente nelle battute finali, ricco di dialoghi da rendere la lettura accattivante, con un messaggio chiaro: chi ha subito violenza non è ripagato dalla vendetta, così il perdono diventa l’esempio della forza interiore e del rispetto del prossimo.
Un romanzo ideale per i preadolescenti per l’attivismo dei protagonisti e per il viatico nell’intrecciare relazioni educate.
