C’è un cucchiaio, nel cassetto delle posate, che non può essere tirato fuori, deve essere sempre lasciato lì. Lo dice la mamma, lo dice il papà e anche la nonna: quel cucchiaio non si tocca perché è l’unica cosa che la bisnonna ha portato con sé dopo la guerra. La bisnonna lo ha poi dato alla nonna e la nonna alla mamma.
Ma allora, si domanda la piccola protagonista, se è così importante, perché deve starsene chiuso lì dentro?
La bambina del libro scopre la storia che si nasconde dietro al cucchiaio della bisnonna e con questa anche la storia delle proprie radici. Rispetto agli adulti, però, che esprimono il loro rispetto per quel che il cucchiaio rappresenta conservandolo in un cassetto, lei ha una visione pratica e concreta delle cose e ne riconosce la bellezza utilizzandole. Così con il cucchiaio scava buche per i suoi semini di zucca – e non è un caso che cresceranno solo quelli piantati con quel cucchiaio – lo utilizza per fare musica con pentole e padelle e per mangiare una gustosa minestra di riso.
Un legame che non si spezza nel tempo.
Le illustrazioni ricercate e potenti di Bea Lozano, che nei tratteggi e nell’utilizzo piatto del colore ricordano l’eleganza dell’Art Déco, alternano immagini del presente a frammenti del passato e di un possibile futuro della preziosa posata. Sono scene dalle proporzioni non sempre realistiche che, con forza poetica e immaginifica, suggeriscono più che descrivere, in cui il cucchiaio non sembra conformarsi alle aspettative ma è pronto a raccontare ancora nuove storie, diverse e importanti.
Il dialogo tra le diverse generazioni tocca l’intero albo e si conclude con tavole che mostrano la bambina, ormai cresciuta, utilizzare il cucchiaio con sua figlia, in un finale aperto e positivo, che segna un rinnovamento delle tradizioni familiari.
