Basandosi sul romanzo bestseller di Siobhan Dowd, che in Italia continua a essere tra i titoli più consigliati nelle bibliografie scolastiche, e sui suoi indimenticabili personaggi, la popolare giallista Robin Stevens ha tratto ispirazione per un romanzo appassionante, con tutti gli ingredienti giusti per farsi amare da ragazzi e ragazze: mistero, umorismo, deduzioni logiche e avvincenti colpi di scena ci portano infatti questa volta tra le strade affollate e piene di vita di New York.
Sono passati tre mesi da quando Ted Spark, un ragazzino neurodivergente dal grande acume e dalla logica inappuntabile, e sua sorella Kat hanno risolto il caso apparentemente senza soluzione della scomparsa del cugino Salim, che si era “volatilizzato” sotto i loro occhi durante un giro sul London Eye.
Questa volta, durante una vacanza a New York, i tre dovranno vedersela con il furto di un quadro del Guggenheim Museum di cui loro zia Gloria è diventata curatrice. Viene rubato un Kandinskij di grande valore e tutti gli indizi sembrano condurre proprio a Gloria, così Ted, Kat e Salim, certi della sua innocenza, tornano a utilizzare le loro doti investigative per scagionarla e acciuffare il vero colpevole.
La strada verso la risoluzione del caso è tortuosa e la verità viene ostacolata in ogni modo, ma l’unione delle menti dei tre ragazzi e la loro capacità di cambiare prospettiva permetterà loro di scoprire la realtà dei fatti dimostrando ancora una volta come la diversità sia un grandissimo valore aggiunto.
Il cervello di Ted, come scrive lui stesso in Il mistero del London Eye, gira infatti con “un sistema operativo diverso” da quello delle altre persone, permettendogli di vedere nessi e creare connessioni cui gli altri difficilmente farebbero caso.
La voce di Ted emerge potentissima dalle pagine del romanzo e fa entrare i lettori nei suoi “meccanismi” mentali, aprendo un importante squarcio sulla sua realtà e un dibattito su diversità e “normalità”.
Dalla sua visione di New York, città per lui nuova e incomprensibile in cui fatica ad adattarsi, a come affronta le dinamiche relazionali con i co-protagonisti, il romanzo è arricchito da una buona dose di ironia, avvicinandosi incredibilmente alla brillante scrittura di Dowd.
