È un romanzo civile, il cui tema è nascosto tra le pieghe della storia di Berto che vorrebbe compiere avventure, indossando una maglia dai superpoteri.
Un giorno la vecchia Ritina invita il giovane protagonista a sgombrare la soffitta della canonica; questi trova un quadernino (con i nomi della gente o rastrellata o sfuggita alla furia nazista) e un diario dell’Angiolino, un bambino che alla fine degli anni Trenta, scrive di essere costretto a cambiare paese e a stabilirsi vicino a delle cascate (l’autrice nel post scriptum dirà che il bambino è il padre e Berto il suo alter-ego).
Lo stile narrativo della Vivarelli è di una rapidità sorprendente, anche quando la sua penna narra luoghi e scene di vita quotidiana; abbonda, inoltre, di ironia e iperbole: («L’Eridano era come suo fratello perché avevano fatto insieme perfino la varicella. Ma l’Eridano chiacchierava come una radio…»), da spingere il giovane lettore a considerare il racconto come il suo racconto.
È pure un romanzo di formazione, una metafora della crescita, perché dopo una serie di esperienze, dopo il viaggio verso le tre cascate, il protagonista è maturo per essere il nuovo Berto, pronto a conservare nel cuore il suo posto, base identitaria per altri viaggi: insomma, un partire per ritornare di pavesiana memoria.
In questa cornice, è diluito il tema civile, della tragedia che l’appennino tosco-emiliano ha conosciuto nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale, quando gli ebrei tentarono di nascondersi, rompendo amori e abitudini, per evitare la deportazione; ma il romanzo dà conto anche di quel clero che si è immolato per salvare vite umane.
Tante verità inquietanti che vengono proiettate sullo schermo, come fossero ombre cinesi, velocemente, senza indugiare, senza sangue, senza visioni truculente.
Infine, è un libro memoriale, in cui le montagne emiliane sono pennellate con amore, da costituire un grande rilancio della bellezza naturalistica italiana.
