“Il progetto presenta la ricerca fotografica di Paolo Monina come una pratica di memoria che non si limita a registrare il reale, bensì lo interroga, lo stratifica e lo espone nella sua opacità. Al centro dell’opera si colloca il paesaggio acquatico, inteso quale deposito simbolico in cui l’esperienza individuale e quella collettiva si raccolgono e resistono alla dispersione dell’oblio. In questa prospettiva, il mare non è mai semplice sfondo naturale: è soglia instabile tra presenza e sottrazione, tra vicenda storica e destino, e diviene il luogo in cui affiorano traiettorie umane segnate da migrazioni, perdite, attese. L’identità, di conseguenza, non si offre come dato definitivo, ma come processo continuamente ridefinito.Il linguaggio visivo di Monina coniuga un controllo formale rigoroso, prossimo alla tradizione documentaria, con una tensione poetica che emancipa lo scatto dalla cronaca. L’immagine si fa “archivio” in senso forte: non accumulazione iconica, bensì campo critico di rielaborazione etica e simbolica, capace di accogliere ciò che elude la rappresentazione diretta — il trauma condiviso, le sedimentazioni sommerse del ricordo, le tracce residuali di esistenze senza nome. In tale orizzonte, la rarefazione non coincide con una sottrazione decorativa, ma diviene ambito operativo del ricordo: ciò che manca persiste come traccia, come tensione percettiva, come equilibrio precario tra quanto l’immagine concede e quanto, consapevolmente, trattiene nel silenzio” (Andrea Carnevali).
