La scrittrice modenese Eliselle torna a raccontarci l’avvincente storia di Judith (William) Shakespeare, ora adolescente, costretta a fingersi maschio per inseguire le sue passioni.
Il mondo è un palcoscenico esplora con ritmo serrato e intreccio avventuroso relazioni e sentimenti della protagonista Judith, ormai adolescente e poi giovane donna, tra tradimenti, amicizie, legami, lutti e decisioni complesse, permettendo a lettori e lettrici di scoprire e immergersi anche nelle contraddizioni del Sedicesimo secolo, non solo in Gran Bretagna ma anche nel resto d’Europa e in particolare in Italia, dove si svolge la parte centrale della vicenda.
Nel romanzo si incontrano protagonisti della Storia del Teatro del Cinquecento, dal poeta e drammaturgo Christopher Marlowe all’impresario James Burbage e agli University Wits (acclamati e rispettati scrittori di stampo accademico come Robert Greene, Thomas Kyd, Thomas Nashe e George Peele). Non mancano inoltre personaggi che creano accurati camei, che rappresentano potenti ed efficaci sotto tracce utili a descrivere le sanguinose lotte religiose che contrapponevano cattolici e protestanti sotto il regno di Elisabetta I: una fra tutte quella del presbitero gesuita Edmund Campion. Frutto di finzione letteraria, invece, altre figure chiave di questa trama articolata, avvincente, ricca di colpi di scena, come quella di Lucrezia Farnese.
