Dal mito antico alla fiaba popolare, dal folklore al racconto gotico e weird, il tema della metamorfosi parla di confini labili e pericolosi: tra umano e bestiale, tra identità stabile e alterità mutevole e caotica, tra civiltà e natura selvaggia; racconta la paura ancestrale di perdere le proprie sembianze, e quindi la propria umanità, ma anche la segreta fascinazione per l’abbandono delle costrizioni razionali, sociali e morali. Licantropie e altre terribili metamorfosi esplora uno dei temi più potenti e universali dell’immaginario umano. Il volume raccoglie 25 racconti distribuiti in quattro sezioni che allargano progressivamente lo sguardo dal classico lupo mannaro alle metamorfosi più inquietanti e imprevedibili.
Licantropie vere o presunte riunisce i grandi classici del genere: dal Lupo mannaro di Orest Somov, ispirato al folklore ucraino, a Frederick Marryat col Lupo bianco dei Monti Hartz e la prima memorabile licantropia femminile; si prosegue con Sutherland Menzies, Catherine Crowe, Rudyard Kipling e altri, fino a H. Warner Munn e Arlton Eadie. La sezione esplora varianti europee ed extraeuropee, mostrando la vitalità del mito in contesti culturali anche molto diversi.
Altre metamorfosi allarga il campo a trasformazioni non lupesche, spesso ancora più disturbanti: l’uomo-tigre di Hugh Clifford, la fanciulla-gatto di Marcel Prévost, la donna-pantera di Ambrose Bierce, l’orrore fungino di W.H. Hodgson, l’ironia di Saki e la maledizione serpentiforme di Lovecraft e Bishop.
Fiabe e dintorni raccoglie testi dal forte valore simbolico e morale: dal Bisclavret alla Meravigliosa storia della bella Melusina di Ludwig Tieck, fino alle fiabe tradizionali africane e ai racconti di Christina Rossetti e Mary Mapes Dodge.
Ultime trasformazioni chiude il volume con due capolavori russi: La famiglia del Vurdalak di Aleksej Konstantinovič Tolstoj e Lazzaro di Leonid Andreev, dove la resurrezione diventa la più radicale delle metamorfosi.
